A Restricted Model of UR Discovery: Evidence from Lakhota∗

چکیده

Under the standard approach to UR discovery (Chomsky and Halle 1968; Kenstowicz and Kisseberth 1977), it is assumed that whenever possible, surface contrasts should be derived in a lawful way from underlying distinctions. In other words, if a surface contrast ([A] vs. [B]) can be distinguished using an underlying difference (/A/ vs. /B/), this is preferable to using some other technique, such as marking all B’s with a diacritic (/A/ vs. /A/+[A→B]) or using one UR (/A/) and listing all B’s as lexical exceptions. In its most extreme version, this bias has lead some analysts to posit abstract, underspecified archiphonemes to avoid listing exceptions. In this paper, I argue against this use of underspecification. I propose a more restrictive model of UR discovery, which cannot use underspecified archiphonemes, but relies instead on exceptions. I discuss two separate but related changes in the history of Lakhota which are unexpected under an underspecification account, but which are predicted by an exception-based analysis.

An Interaction between 3A Approach of Entrepreneurship and International Trade: Evidence from Selected Asian Countries

In the relevant literature, there has been a lack of discussion to focus particularly on the relationship between entrepreneurship and international trade. It is more restricted when one intends to seek an interaction between international trade and the indexes of the 3A approach of entrepreneurship, including entrepreneurial attitude, activities and aspirations which are collected from Global ...

Intersting SAR studies of pregnane alkaloids isolated from genus Sarcococca against cholinesterase enzymes

The genus Sarcococca is widely distributed in South-East Asia and it comprises 14 species. The genus is traditionally used for gastrointestinal ulcers, infections, pain and in rheumatic fevers. Recently, our group has derived a comprehensive SAR relationship picture for a new series of natural cholinesterase inhibitors isolated from Sarcococca saligna (syn. S. pruniformis, Buxaceae). The fracti...

The Productivity of Infixation in Lakhota*

A growing body of work on morphological irregularity has shown that the productivity of irregular morphological processes is sensitive to phonological context. However, these studies have focused almost exclusively on patterns of irregularity found in European languages. In this paper, I discuss a typologically different pattern of irregularity found in Lakhota: person marking appears as a pref...

A Hybrid Algorithm based on Deep Learning and Restricted Boltzmann Machine for Car Semantic Segmentation from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)-based Thermal Infrared Images

Nowadays, ground vehicle monitoring (GVM) is one of the areas of application in the intelligent traffic control system using image processing methods. In this context, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles based on thermal infrared (UAV-TIR) images is one of the optimal options for GVM due to the suitable spatial resolution, cost-effective and low volume of images. The methods that have been prop...
